Record High for Disadvantaged Students Securing University Places in the UK

  • 27,600 disadvantaged UK students secure university places, a 7% increase from 2023.
  • England reports record-high progression, while Wales and Northern Ireland see slight declines.
  • Overall university acceptances increase by 3%, with key subjects like engineering and law seeing significant growth.

The number of UK students from disadvantaged backgrounds securing university places has hit a record high, with 27,600 18-year-olds gaining spots—a 7% increase compared to the previous year.

Overall, the number of university applicants across all age groups rose by 3% to 425,680, reflecting a rebound from last year’s dip.

UK University Acceptances Surge Among Disadvantaged Students

A record 27,600 18-year-olds from the most disadvantaged backgrounds in the UK have secured university places this year, marking a 7% increase from 2023. This rise underscores the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to widen access to higher education, particularly in England, which recorded the highest number of disadvantaged students accepted.

While England saw impressive gains, Wales and Northern Ireland experienced slight declines in their disadvantaged student numbers. In Wales, 1,200 students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds gained places, down from 1,250 last year, while Northern Ireland saw a marginal drop from 1,010 to 1,000.

The overall picture for UK university acceptances is also positive, with 425,680 applicants securing places, a 3% increase from last year. Engineering, architecture, and law are among the subjects seeing the largest growth in placed applicants, reflecting a shift in student interest towards these fields.

However, higher education institutions are facing challenges beyond enrollment numbers. Financial pressures, policy uncertainties, and a decrease in international student visa approvals are creating an uncertain environment. With around 30,000 places still available through UCAS Clearing, universities will need to focus on converting acceptances and retaining students to maintain financial stability.

The record increase in disadvantaged students securing university places in the UK is a significant achievement, highlighting the impact of widening participation efforts. However, challenges remain for higher education institutions as they navigate financial pressures and shifting student demographics.

“Widening access and participation is not just about numbers; it’s about opening up doors and transforming the lives of students through higher education so they can pursue their passions and career aspirations.” — Dr. Jo Saxton CBE, Chief Executive of UCAS.
