British make up the majority of foreign students in Bulgaria

British students make up the majority of international students studying in Bulgaria, a country in southeast Europe that is becoming more and more appealing to them as a study-abroad destination.

There are currently 5,000 British students enrolled in Bulgarian higher education institutions, according to a webinar held on November 23, 2023, as part of the British Council’s Transnational Education (TNE) in Europe series. Some of these students can earn two degrees—one from a Bulgarian institution and the other from a British university—while avoiding paying tuition fees equivalent to those in the UK.

Students in Bulgaria

Those seeking an English-taught professional degree or diploma in a sunny European destination are finding Bulgaria, a member of the European Union, to have a comparatively low cost of living and a relatively stable geopolitical environment.

Medical and dental degrees are very popular among British students, as they are in high demand for domestic students at UK universities and have extremely high tuition costs for overseas students wishing to attend British universities.

The number of students from neighboring European countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and others who are interested in studying in Bulgaria is also increasing.

The opportunity to earn a double degree—one from the UK or another nation and another from within the European Union—is currently being offered by many Bulgarian universities.

The webinar began with the British Council’s director for Bulgaria and Romania stating that the organization’s top priority since Brexit has been to expand TNE, especially in Europe. While fewer students from the European Union can now study in the UK due to Brexit, UK TNE still has the chance to connect with bright students in EU member states like Bulgaria.

Due to its favorable regulatory framework for enhancing higher education capacity through international education, Bulgaria is showing particular appeal to foreign partners.

Students who complete double degrees have credentials that are accepted in the UK and the EU, giving them access to the EU job market and the opportunity to pursue further education in other EU members.

Cardiff Met has established a partnership with VUM, a reputable partner, to work together on various levels, such as technology, new enterprise (TNE), and research collaboration. More than 13,000 students from Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Greece, Egypt, India, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam are receiving degrees from the university thanks to its extensive network of international partners.
