Ontario Implements Fishing Restrictions on Ganaraska River for Salmon Protection

  • Fishing prohibited from September 1st to October 14th, 2024, in a key stretch of the Ganaraska River.
  • Restrictions aim to protect vulnerable salmon during their peak migration.
  • Fishing for trout and other salmon species will be allowed from October 15th onwards.

The Ontario government has introduced new fishing regulations to safeguard the salmon population on the Ganaraska River during their migration period.

Following the closure, anglers will have opportunities to fish for various trout and salmon species from October 15th to December 31st.

New Fishing Regulations to Enhance Salmon Conservation on Ganaraska River

In response to concerns about salmon conservation, Ontario has implemented fishing regulations to protect the species during their migration on the Ganaraska River. The regulations, which run from September 1st to October 14th, 2024, aim to address the vulnerability of salmon in a concentrated area created by the Corbett Dam fishway. This move reflects the community’s commitment to preserving the river’s biodiversity.

Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky highlights that while fishing is restricted in the designated stretch during the peak migration season, the restrictions are designed to ensure the long-term health of the salmon population. The closure period is a proactive step to mitigate the risks posed to the fish as they navigate this critical part of their journey.

After the closure, the river will be open for fishing a variety of trout and salmon species, offering new opportunities for anglers. The Municipality urges residents and visitors to comply with the regulations to contribute to the conservation effort.

The new regulations are a crucial measure to support the Ganaraska River’s ecosystem and the salmon population’s health. By following these guidelines, anglers can play a part in ensuring the river remains a thriving habitat for years to come.

“Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky says the new regulations are the product of the community’s input.”
