Due to the risk of floods brought on by the state of Queensland’s heavy rains, thousands of residents have been told to relocate to higher ground by Australian officials.
At the moment, there is severe flooding occurring in a few suburbs of Cairns, a popular tourist destination and the entry point to the reef.
Severe Flooding
Residents in certain areas of north Queensland are being advised to evacuate to higher ground by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, which has issued an emergency notice.
Heavy rain from the former tropical cyclone Jasper, which ripped through the area this week and is expected to bring fresh downpours on Sunday, is what caused the floods.
According to the Cairns Local Disaster Management Group, the town will experience its highest level of flooding later on Sunday, submerging roads, buildings, residences, and bridges.
There could be a loss of phone, water, sewerage, and power in the area. The rest of Sunday is expected to see more heavy rain, so the situation will be closely watched.
