  • Meteorology Department issues ‘Red’ alert for Arabian Sea.
  • Strong winds up to 80kmph expected; rough seas forecasted.
  • Urgent advice for fishermen and naval communities to stay ashore.

Recent forecasts from the Meteorology Department have raised alarms for coastal regions and maritime communities. A ‘Red’ alert has been issued specifically for the Arabian Sea, warning of very strong winds reaching speeds of 70-80kmph and extremely rough seas.

This alert covers a vast sea area and advises fishermen and naval operators within these boundaries (07N – 20N and 55E – 68E) to refrain from venturing out until further notice.

Safety Precautions Urged as Meteorology Department Issues Severe Weather Warnings

Moreover, localized thundershowers are expected in Uva province and parts of Ampara and Batticaloa districts during evening hours. Strong winds are forecasted over various regions, including the Western slopes of central hills and coastal areas like Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Monaragala.

For maritime communities, especially fishermen, a ‘Red’ alert has been issued due to the imminent risk posed by severe winds and rough seas in the Arabian Sea. With wind speeds anticipated to reach 70-80kmph, coupled with turbulent sea conditions, authorities have strongly advised against venturing into these waters until the weather conditions improve. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard lives and prevent potential maritime accidents amidst challenging weather conditions.

In addition to the ‘Red’ alert, other regions are also expected to experience adverse weather conditions. The Western slopes of the central hills and several provinces in Sri Lanka may encounter strong winds of 40-50kmph, accompanied by occasional light showers. The Meteorology Department has emphasized the importance of precautionary measures, urging the public and especially maritime communities to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines during this period of heightened weather activity.

In conclusion, staying informed and adhering to weather advisories is crucial during such periods of volatile weather. By prioritizing safety and following guidelines from the Meteorology Department, individuals and communities can mitigate risks and ensure their well-being during these challenging weather conditions.
