  • The Canadian-Indonesian duo won 72.5% of their first-serve points and broke serve four times.
  • Their next challenge will be facing Americans Jessica Pegula and Asia Muhammad in the semifinals.

Leylah Fernandez and Aldila Sutjiadi are advancing to the semifinals of the Wuhan Open after securing a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Ellen Perez and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

The Canadian-Indonesian duo dominated key moments, breaking their opponents’ serve four times and saving 11 of 13 break points in a match that lasted just over an hour.

Leylah Fernandez and Aldila Sutjiadi Power into Wuhan Open Semifinals

Meanwhile, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand fell to Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and Russia’s Irina Khromacheva in another quarterfinal. Despite being the top-seeded team, they struggled to win key points, losing 6-4, 6-3, and breaking their opponents’ serve just once. Fernandez and Sutjiadi now look forward to taking on the American team of Jessica Pegula and Asia Muhammad in their upcoming semifinal match.

Their match was characterized by strategic serves and consistent play, with the duo converting four of their 11 break-point opportunities. The pair has built a solid partnership, combining their individual strengths to defeat one of the tournament’s top teams in just 1 hour and 19 minutes. Their performance in Wuhan has been one of resilience and tactical brilliance.

On the other hand, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe faced a tough loss in their quarterfinal match against Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and Russia’s Irina Khromacheva. Despite being the top-seeded team, Dabrowski and Routliffe struggled with their serves, only winning 59% of their first-serve points and were broken four times by their opponents. The defeat marks a disappointing end to their Wuhan Open campaign.

As Fernandez and Sutjiadi prepare to face Americans Jessica Pegula and Asia Muhammad in the semifinals, their confidence will be bolstered by their quarterfinal performance. A spot in the final is within reach if they continue their strong form in the next round.

With their successful run at the Wuhan Open, Fernandez and Sutjiadi have shown they are a formidable pair in women’s doubles. Their upcoming match against Pegula and Muhammad will be a critical test of their partnership and performance under pressure.
