Richard Marles, the Australian Minister of Defence, and Grant Shapps, his UK counterpart, signed the pact in Parliament House in Canberra after yearly bilateral ministerial defense talks.
Security treaty
With the UK taking the lead in Ukraine and addressing the Houthi threat, as well as growing its contributions in the Pacific and Indo-Pacific, the two nations have a vibrant and long-lasting relationship.
The treaty provides a mechanism for consultation if either country’s sovereignty or regional security is threatened, formalizing discussions on matters impacting each other’s sovereignty and security.
The treaty has provisions for collaborative training of Ukrainian troops in the UK as well as for ongoing collaboration in intelligence, military exercises, undersea warfare, capability development, and military training. The accord seeks to fortify the two nations’ current defense cooperation and expand defense-related cooperation.
