India has recorded an increase in COVID-19 instances in a single day; currently, there are 4,049 active cases. The introduction of a novel variety and the chilly weather are to blame for the rise.

In the course of a single day, five deaths have been reported, two from Kerala, one from Maharashtra, and one from Jammu and Kashmir.

Covid-19

On Saturday, Maharashtra reported 154 cases of COVID-19 and two fatalities. The state also reported 139 instances of the JN.1 variant. Mumbai reported 21 cases of COVID-19. 14,790 coronavirus tests were performed during the day, according to a health department bulletin. Of those, 2,421 were performed using the RT-PCR method and 12,369 Rapid Antigen Tests.

Mumbai saw its first Covid death of the year when a 52-year-old Chembur resident passed away from complications associated with the disease.

Four SARSCoV-2 deaths have occurred in the state of Nagpur this year after another person passed away from the virus. 15 of the 29 newly reported JN.1 cases came from Pune, whereas none from Mumbai.

Right now, 13 COVID patients are being admitted to at least three private hospitals in Kolkata; the majority of them are in intensive care units and have serious coexisting conditions.

To determine if the samples are JN.1 strain, one hospital has sent the genomes of three individuals for sequencing. Presently, over 100 Covid cases are ongoing in the state.

By January 5, Covid subvariant JN.1 accounted for around 62% of cases in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The most widely dispersed variety in the US and worldwide, according to the organization, is JN.1, a descendent of BA.2.86. There’s no evidence that JN.1 leads to more serious illness, and the vaccinations that are now administered should boost immunity against JN.1.
