Indian Navy men had their death sentences commuted by Qatar

Eight former Indian Navy officers had their death sentences mitigated on Thursday by a Qatari Court of Appeal, marking a significant diplomatic victory for India.

According to recent accounts, the Indian Ambassador was in the courtroom as the verdict was being given, in addition to the relatives of the former officials.

Eight former sailors are being charged with espionage in Qatar; the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that it will support them with consular services.

The veterans, who included Sailor Ragesh, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Amit Nagpal, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, and Commander Amit Nagpal, were held in Qatar’s Ministry of Interior on August 30, 2022, for questioning and solitary confinement.

Although the specifics of the allegations were not made public, they were formally charged. After that, the veterans were placed in groups and permitted to live in shared housing. According to India, it will keep looking into legal options.
