Most of China is frozen by a cold wave, closing roadways

  • Authorities in various regions of China have limited traffic on highways due to a cold wave.
  • Temperatures may drop to below freezing in several areas of the northern provinces.
  • Shanghai also issued its first cold wave warning of the year.

Authorities in various regions of China have limited traffic on highways due to a cold wave that has forced temperatures to drop below freezing throughout the majority of the nation.

Temperatures may drop to below freezing in several areas of the northern provinces of Heilongjiang and Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Qinghai, according to forecasts from China’s National Meteorological Center.

Cold wave

It is predicted that the cold wave, which is traveling from north to south, will keep temperatures down into the weekend. Early next week, the city of Yichun in Heilongjiang might surpass its record low of minus 47.9C from January 1980.

Traffic limits were implemented in Henan province due to numerous accidents on different expressways caused by winter, slick roads, and severe fog.

Snowfall prompted the province of Ningxia traffic officials to enact temporary traffic controls, and in Gansu, adjacent, several highways were stopped and trains were suspended.

As a result of snow, ice, and poor visibility, parts of the national and provincial roadways in Tibetan cities were closed. Shanghai also issued its first cold wave warning of the year.
