Migrants traveling in a caravan from Mexico to the US are rising

  • The caravan is made up of thousands of migrants from southern Mexico who are trying to enter the US.
  • Local aid groups say the majority are from Central and South America.
  • The goal of the migrants who have joined the caravan, which departed from Tapachula, is to reach the US.

Presently numbering about 7,000, the caravan is made up of thousands of migrants from southern Mexico who are trying to enter the United States.

Local aid groups say the majority are from Central and South America. To discuss reducing the number of migrants entering the US, US President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with leaders of the region.

Nonetheless, Biden has come under fire for the way he has handled immigration, especially at the border between the US and Mexico. Democrat mayors contend their cities are unable to accommodate and feed the migrants, while Republicans accuse him of not doing enough to stop the flow.

In the fiscal years 2022 and 2023, more than 2 million persons were detained at the southern border of the United States. Over 200,000 migrants were detained by the US Border Patrol in September 2023 for illegally crossing the US-Mexico border.

The goal of the migrants who have joined the caravan, which departed from Tapachula, is to reach the United States. Irineo Mújica, one of the caravan‘s organizers, claimed that the migrants had left together after being left “stranded” by Mexican authorities in the progressively dangerous state of Chiapas.
