The WHO’s regional director is now nominated by the daughter of the Bangladesh PM

  • Saima Wazed is the nominee of the WHO to be the organization’s next regional director for Southeast Asia.

Specializing in mental health, Saima Wazed is the nominee of the World Health Organization to be the organization’s next regional director for Southeast Asia. Her daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, is her son.

Nepal and Dr. Shambhu Prasad Acharya are among the other candidates. At the WHO Executive Board’s 154th session in Geneva, Wazed’s nomination will be made.

WHO’s regional director

The World Health Organization‘s Southeast Asia region has nominated Saima Wazed, a mental health specialist, to be its next regional director. The daughter of the Bangladeshi prime minister is Sheikh Hasina.

A senior WHO official named Dr Shambhu Prasad Acharya was the other contender. Nepal made the nomination. At the 76th meeting of the WHO Regional Committee for the South-East Asia Region, the member states decided to nominate Wazed for the position in a closed session.

The nomination will be presented to the WHO Executive Board at its 154th session, which is scheduled to occur in Geneva, Switzerland, from January 22–27, as per a statement released by the global health organization. On February 1, 2024, Wazed will go into office.
