The government’s decision to exclude Muslims from the Act has drawn criticism, but Home Minister Amit Shah has clarified that the purpose of the CAA is to protect minorities who are being persecuted for their religion.

Acts currently in effect permit Muslims from these nations to petition for Indian citizenship. The US will keep a careful eye on the CAA’s implementation in light of its alarm on its notification on March 11.

Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019: For eligible migrants who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, the qualifying period for citizenship application was shortened from 11 to 5 years.
