The largest Hindu temple in the western hemisphere and the second-largest in the world, Akshardham Temple, was opened in New Jersey, USA.

Leader of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan (BAPS), Mahant Swami Maharaj, presided at the October 8th dedication of the 191-foot-tall temple. The life and teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan were honored, together with Indian customs and culture, in this temple.

The second-largest temple

Delaware Governor John Carney, along with Congressman Steny Hoyer, attended the inaugural event. Universal ideals like inclusion, seva, bhakti, spiritual transcendence, love for all people, and the idea that we are all members of one family are reflected in the temple, which is devoted to society and humanity.

There are 400 distinct rivers and lakes represented on the Brahmakund, or step wall, in front of the temple. These include the Yamuna and Ganga in India, the US, Australia, Africa, the US, and the US’s Mississippi, East River, and Lake Michigan.

Since the temple is accessible to everyone and gives guests a sense of community, it represents the diversity seen in the complex. Volunteer spokeswoman at Akshardham Temple and Columbia University religion and media expert Yogi Trivedi remarked that the temple is not simply an American and a global narrative, but also a Hindu American and Hindu story.

The world is one family, inclusiveness, seva, bhakti, spiritual transcendence, love for all people, and these global ideals are all displayed on the foundation plinth of the mandir.

Congressman Steny Hoyer was impressed by the artistry of the peacocks, elephants, and other sculptures, but the community that constructed it was even more remarkable.

He expressed his gratitude to the volunteers for their contribution and said that they had given their time because they shared the principles this edifice stands for: equality, emancipation, truth, harmony, and, above all, serving others. Not only are Hindu principles embedded here, but human ones as well.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congrats message for the temple’s building through his consul general in New York, Randhir Jaiswal.
