For the murder of seven babies and six additional children at a neonatal ward, a British nurse named Lucy Letby was given a life sentence without the possibility of release. The 33-year-old employee killed five boys and two girls while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northern England between 2015 and 2016.
Judge James Goss charged the woman with engaging in a “cruel, calculated, and cynical campaign of child murder” that targeted the most defenseless kids.
Child serial killer
Letby’s motives are unknown, but she is believed to have carefully planned her acts, which included messing with their breathing tubes, injecting air into their veins, feeding them air or milk through tubes into their stomachs, and administering insulin through their drips. Late in June 2016, she was relieved of service, and in July 2018, she was apprehended at home.
For the past ten months, Lucy Letby, who is regarded as the deadliest child serial killer in recent UK history, has been on trial for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of another six while working at a hospital.
The hospital allegedly witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of infant deaths and unexpected health issues, according to the prosecution.
They also asserted that Lucy was a persistently evil presence in the neonatal unit and that she hurt the infants in covert ways. Letby gave 14 days of testimony while denying any misconduct.
The kids could have perished or collapsed owing to natural causes, a staffing shortage at the hospital, or subpar care from others, the defense claimed.
