The controversy started when a deputy minister from the Maldives, together with other cabinet members and government officials, made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep.

“Lakshadweep has to be on your list for those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them,” was the message PM Modi wrote alongside images he shared of the ocean, white beaches, and clear blue skies.

Regarding PM Modi’s visit to the Indian island chain, Shiuna, the deputy minister of youth empowerment in the Maldives, made derogatory and satirical remarks.

Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that New Delhi has always been a good friend to the island nation and denounced the use of “hateful language” against India by government officials on social media.
