Marco Arop of Canada won the men’s 800m gold medal

Marco Arop of Canada won the gold medal in the men’s 800-meter race on Saturday at the World Athletics Championships.

Arop completed the race in 1 minute, 44.24 seconds. The 24-year-old Edmonton native is the first man from Canada to win the event’s world gold medal.

At the 2017 World Championships, he won bronze, becoming only the second Canadian to win a medal in the men’s 800. In Osaka, Japan, in 2007, Gary Reed won silver.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya (1:44.53) and Ben Pattison of Great Britain (1:44.83) won silver and bronze, respectively.

Coming out of lane seven, Arop was in last place for the entirety of the opening lap of the two-lap race. Early in the last lap, he moved out to the third lane to get in front of the pack, and he then coasted to victory.

Arop came into the world championships as the top-ranked 800 runner and with the third-best time worldwide this year, clocking in at 1:43.30.
