Fox, who finished last in the final but was the quickest in the semifinals, appeared to have cost herself the championship when she touched the first gate and was given a two-second time penalty.

She managed to keep it together and complete the task at hand by moving through the rapids more than a second faster than her competitors, winning in 103.60 seconds overall.

Klaudia Zwoliska of Poland won bronze with a score of 105.00. Fox added a fourth triumph in the kayak (K1) to her four canoe (C1) and two kayak cross triumphs with her victory, which gave her a total of ten individual world championship titles.

It had been five years since she had triumphed in one of the most prestigious individual global championships in C1 or K1. Fox won less than a day after taking bronze in the women’s C1 final.
