Australia is donating $5 million in humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Khaama Press reported. This is in response to the growing problems of poverty and unemployment in Afghanistan.
Australia has given more than $5.1 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, the organization claimed in a news release on Sunday. Additionally, this sum will be used in the relief and livelihood sectors, according to OCHA, the UN organization in charge of coordinating humanitarian aid.
Humanitarian aid
According to the organization, the Australian government contributed over 69 million Australian dollars to the Humanitarian Fund for Afghanistan after it was established.
According to an earlier UN OCHA estimate, an immediate budget of $570.7 million is needed to provide basic winter supplies for Afghans in need, according to Khaama Press.
OCHA estimates that 29.2 million Afghans, including 21.3 million participants in relief initiatives, need humanitarian aid. Additionally, the group stated that USD 3.23 billion is needed this year for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan.
According to Khaama Press, just about $1 billion had been provided as of August, leaving a $2.43 billion gap in the budget.
Earlier, the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations issued a warning that at least 41 million people in Afghanistan are suffering from severe acute food insecurity at an alarming level. Afghanistan is one of the 10 countries where about two million people experience severe food insecurity.
Due to its reliance on Western aid, Afghanistan lost this backing when the Taliban took control in August 2021, following the withdrawal of the US and NATO. The rapid economic collapse resulted from this, forcing previously independent Afghans to rely on aid to survive.
