Heavy Rain and Floods in Auckland

Auckland is the largest metropolitan city in the north island of New Zealand. This city is surrounded by 48 volcanoes and picturesque islands and it is an oceanic island.

On Friday, Auckland experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall and is the worst downpour on record. They are bracing for more heavy rains this week with more severe weather alerts for New Zealanders, who are in the flood-hit country.

Expected more Rains as Flood remains

According to the Council of Auckland, in the coming days, they expect further heavy rain occurs when still the flood remains. At least four of them have lost their lives and about 350 people are needed emergency accommodation. Auckland continues the state of an emergency order in the flooded areas, said New Zealand Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins.

The city’s Mayor said in a tweet on Monday, With the unprecedented rainfall Auckland has seen since Friday, even “ordinary” torrential rain in the days ahead could cause more flooding and damage than it would usually.

It appears that the weather has improved in some parts of the city, but our region is not out of the woods yet,” Wayne Brown said.

Friday was the wettest day on record for a number of locations in Auckland, The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), the country’s climate science body, said.

Some footage and images online showed people trapped in waist-deep floodwater, rescuers carrying out evacuations on kayaks, and grocery items floating down the aisles of several flooded supermarkets, and also the Auckland Airport also temporarily closed due to heavy rain causing a flood.

New Zealand media identified that two individuals died in the floods. Daniel Mark Miller, 34, was found dead in a culvert in the Auckland suburb Wairau Valley, and Daniel Newth, a 25-year-old arborist, died while kayaking near his North Shore home.
