The top rank in the list of the deadliest and most hazardous cities in the world belongs to a region in North America.
The list of deadliest cities, which are plagued by gang violence, brutal killings, shootings, and poverty, was created using homicide rates, which calculate the number of homicides per 100,000 residents.
World’s most violent cities
Mexico has been ranked as the deadliest country in the annual rankings by The Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice (CCPSCJ). Nine of the top 10 most violent cities were Mexican, with Colima being the sixth consecutive year it has been ranked the world’s most dangerous.
Other cities in South and Central America, as well as the United States, also dominated the list. New Orleans was the only city outside Mexico to make the top 10.
Most cities face dense and rapidly expanding populations, poverty-ridden districts, and gang violence, leading to an average homicide rate 10 times higher than the rest of the world at 64.55 per 100,000 people.
In 2022, there were 601 intentional killings in Colima, the worst city in Mexico, with 182 homicides per 100,000 residents. Four rival cartel gangs, Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Sinaloa, Santa Rosa de Lima, and Cárteles Unidos, control the city. In addition to these, there were cities in Mexico called Zamora, Ciudad Obregón, Zacatecas, Tijuana, Celaya, Juárez, Uruapan, and Acapulco.
Over the past 20 years, the number of gun-related deaths in the United States has significantly increased as a result of gun violence. The murder capital of the United States with the greatest homicide rate since before 2000 was New Orleans, where 97% of homicides in 2022 were caused by gun violence.
Criminologists and law enforcement officials think the COVID-19 pandemic’s stress, police forces’ retreat following racial justice protests, and the proliferation of weaponry are to blame for the recent rise in crime.
