Deal on fentanyl crackdown to be discussed on Wednesday

  • Beijing is going to take measures to stop producing and exporting fentanyl.
  • The agreement is still in the final stages of negotiation.
  • Biden’s chances of winning have been negatively impacted by Republicans’ attacks over how it has handled the trafficking of fentanyl.

It is anticipated that Joe Biden and Xi Jinping will declare a deal under which Beijing will combat the manufacturing and trafficking of fentanyl, a drug associated with several health problems. The US president may have achieved a noteworthy victory with this.

To halt the flow of fentanyl and the raw materials needed to produce synthetic opioids, China is allegedly pursuing chemical companies.

In return for the US lifting sanctions against China’s Forensic Police Institute, negotiations are underway to reach an agreement with the Chinese organization. The agreement will probably be made public at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco.

In addition to noting that strict enforcement is necessary for results, the US views the agreement as potentially groundbreaking.

If Washington and Beijing‘s already shaky relations worsen due to the Biden administration’s critical remarks, any agreement could be susceptible to failure. 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is exported primarily by Mexican cartels.

Since then, the drug’s public health crisis has only gotten worse, with overdose deaths more than tripling between 2015 and 2021. One of the many cities dealing with the aftermath of an increase in addiction and overdose deaths is San Francisco, which is hosting this week’s APEC summit. Because the fentanyl supply was causing tension in US-China relations, San Francisco Mayor London Breed urged Xi to work with Beijing to halt the drug’s flow.

Sanctions levied by the US against Chinese people and businesses will hinder China-US collaboration in the fight against drugs. Aiming for $1.2 billion, the Biden administration has investigated and prosecuted Chinese companies implicated in the fentanyl trade in addition to targeting individual drug runners.

The death penalty for drug dealers, naval embargoes, and military deployment are among the issues raised by Republican presidential contenders DeSantis, Haley, and Trump. Trade between the US and China ought to be stopped until China ceases executing American citizens.
