- WHO says all Covid-19 origin theories remain possible, citing data gaps.
- China’s lack of transparency hampers investigation into the pandemic’s roots.
- Zoonotic spillover remains the most scientifically supported hypothesis.
After four years of exhaustive study, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the origins of Covid-19 remain uncertain, with all hypotheses—including zoonotic spillover and lab leak—still under consideration.
According to WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, repeated requests to the Chinese government for viral sequences, market animal records, and laboratory safety documentation have gone unanswered.
Origins Unknown: WHO Investigation Into Covid-19 Hampered by Missing Data
While zoonotic transmission—where a virus jumps from animals to humans—is still the most supported explanation based on current evidence, the WHO could not rule out alternative possibilities. Data from the Wuhan Huanan Seafood Market, where 60% of early cases were linked, suggests a possible spillover, but experts say more environmental and genetic information is needed for certainty.
The lab leak theory, once dismissed as unlikely, is now considered plausible due to the absence of critical biosafety data from research facilities in Wuhan. Intelligence assessments from agencies like the CIA and Germany’s BND have pointed to possible laboratory origins, but these findings have not been made available to the WHO or its scientific advisory groups.
Another theory investigated was the cold chain hypothesis, suggesting the virus may have arrived in Wuhan through imported frozen goods. However, Dr. Marietjie Venter, chair of the SAGO committee, clarified that the available data is insufficient to confirm or dismiss this theory conclusively.
Despite substantial efforts, the investigation highlights a global failure in information-sharing. The WHO has called for international cooperation, urging all nations, especially those with relevant intelligence or data, to prioritize scientific openness over political considerations.
With no access to key early data, the world remains in the dark about how Covid-19 emerged. Only through global transparency can science hope to uncover the virus’s true origin.
