WTISD 2024 serves as a reminder of the work still needed to guarantee that everyone can take advantage of digital technologies. To commemorate ITU’s birthday and talk about how digital innovation affects sustainable development, a virtual hour will be held on May 17th, bringing together innovators and digital professionals. The ITU TV Studio in Geneva, Switzerland will be the streaming location for the conversation.
The goal of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to increase public awareness of the potential benefits that using the Internet and other ICTs can have for economies and society, as well as strategies for closing the digital divide. Commemorating the establishment of the ITU and the 1865 signature of the first International Telegraph Convention, it has been observed yearly since 1969.
The UN General Assembly was urged by the World Summit on the Information Society in November 2005 to designate May 17, 2005, as World Information Society Day to highlight the significance of ICT and the vast array of information society-related concerns brought forth by WSIS.
It was resolved to observe May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in 2006 during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey.
