After winning the Women’s World Cup, Spain finally rose to the top of the FIFA rankings

Spain beat England in the World Cup final in August, moving up four places to second. But they have finally taken the top spot in the UEFA Women’s Nations League following a series of impressive performances.

Spain claims top spot in Women’s FIFA rankings

Spain topped their group with five wins – including a double over Sweden — to qualify for the Nations League finals in February, where they will face the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

The United States moved up to second place in the rankings and France is third. France also qualified for the Nations League final, where they will face Germany in another semi-final.

European champions England, who missed out on a place at the Paris Olympics, remain fourth, with Sweden dropping to fifth after finishing third in their Nations League group with two wins from six games.

The introduction of the Central African Republic and Macau brings the number of women’s ranked teams to 192, while North Korea (ninth), American Samoa, Madagascar, and the Bahamas reappear on the list.
