According to his spokesperson, the governor of the far-northern Murmansk region of Russia was hospitalized on Friday following a man’s stabbing.
On Thursday night, while hosting a meeting outside a cultural center in the village of Apatity, 45-year-old Andrey Chibis was stabbed in the stomach.
Russian Governor
According to Liliya Sechkina, the patient is presently in a post-operative stage, and it is too soon to determine the course of their recuperation.
In a video that was uploaded to Telegram early on Friday, Chibis declared from his hospital bed that he had “come around” following surgery and that the medical staff had saved his life.
Even though he didn’t know the governor directly, the attacker—who was taken into custody and will likely face mental health testing—admitted that his hatred of the governor was the reason behind the attack.
Since 2019, Chibis, a member of the ruling United Russia party, has been in charge of the Murmansk area. Due to his backing of the Kremlin’s offensive in Ukraine, he was hit with sanctions by the EU in 2022.
