According to Reuters, which cited the defense ministry and the state news agency RIA, a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane crashed on Wednesday in the Belgorod region of the country.
A big jet plummeting toward the earth and blowing up in a massive fireball was captured on camera by Baza, a channel connected to Russian security agencies, and shared on the Telegram messaging app.
A military transport
The Il-76 is a military transport plane used for the airlifting of personnel, supplies, weaponry, and equipment. It can accommodate up to 90 passengers and has a standard crew of five.
The region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced that he was heading to the location of an “incident” that had happened in the northeast of Belgorod city, in the Korochansky district. He claimed that emergency personnel and detectives had already arrived in the area.
In response to an inquiry from a reporter, the Kremlin stated that it was investigating the matter. The bordering region of Belgorod, which is part of Ukraine, has seen several attacks in recent months, including a missile strike in December that claimed 25 lives.
Six crew members and three friends perished in the crash of a Russian military aircraft on Wednesday morning, along with prisoners of war from Ukraine.
It’s unclear what caused the collision and whether anyone made it out alive. A special military commission is on its route to the crash scene while authorities look into the cause.
