For the occasion of Guru Purnima, at least 10,000 individuals, ranging in age from four to 84, met on July 3 at the Allen East Centre in Texas to recite the Bhagavad Gita. SGS Geeta Foundation and Yoga Sangeeta Trust America organized the event.
The recitation took place in the presence of revered spiritual leader Pujya Ganapathy Sachidananda ji, known for his meditative music and regarded as a divine mentor who upholds age-old Vedic customs.
Chanting the Bhagavad Gita
The founding pontiff of the Ashram is the Avadhoota Datta Peetham Ashram in Mysuru, an international organisation for spiritual, cultural, and social welfare.
Hindus traditionally honour their gurus or spiritual teachers on Guru Purnima. The holiday is observed on the first full moon in the Hindu month of Ashad (July–August), which comes after the summer solstice.

Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists all take part in the festivities in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. To receive their gurus’ blessings on this day, devotees express appreciation and devotion to them.
The practice developed as a way to honour Maharshi Veda Vyasa, a renowned sage who is thought to have been born on this day and who started composing the Brahma Sutras on Guru Purnima.
Buddhists observe this day as the day the Buddha delivered his first sermon, while Hindus commemorate Vyasa. In the yogic tradition, Guru Purnima commemorates the day Shiva started teaching yoga to the Saptarishis as the first guru.
