Tamil Nadu on High Alert as Torrential Rains Close Schools, Prompt WFH Advisory
Heavy rains have prompted an Orange Alert in Tamil Nadu, with severe weather forecasted to affect several key districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu. Schools and colleges have been ordered to close as the state braces for three days of intense downpours, while IT firms have been advised to allow employees to work from home until October 18.
The low-pressure system developing over the southeast Bay of Bengal is moving toward the Tamil Nadu coast, threatening to bring heavy rains across the region. Chief Minister MK Stalin convened a high-level meeting to review the state’s preparedness, and district collectors from affected areas discussed local contingency plans, including the deployment of pumps and motorboats to handle waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of potential hazards such as traffic disruptions, landslides in hilly areas, and damages to informal settlements. The government is urging citizens to stay vigilant, as water levels in rivers and reservoirs are expected to rise due to the continuous rainfall.
Fishermen have been explicitly warned to avoid venturing into the sea during this period, as rough weather could pose a significant risk. With heavy rain already impacting districts like Tiruvallur, the authorities are on high alert to manage flooding, road blockages, and other weather-related disruptions.
With the state on high alert for the next few days, residents in affected districts are urged to take safety precautions, stay indoors, and avoid unnecessary travel as the heavy rains persist.
“An Orange Alert is in effect from October 14-16 as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.”
