  • North Korea commemorates “Victory Day” with parades, banquets, and fireworks.
  • The Korean War armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, ending three years of conflict.

On the anniversary of the Korean War, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for the creation of a “paradise for the people,” urging the current generation to uphold the ideology defended by past war heroes.

Festivities across North Korea marked the day, referred to as “Victory Day,” with parades, banquets, and mass dances in Pyongyang’s main square.

North Korea Celebrates “Victory Day” with Grand Festivities

Kim Jong-un visited memorials honoring Korean War veterans as North Korea commemorated the 71st anniversary of the armistice. The North Korean leader paid tribute at the Tower of Friendship, a monument dedicated to Chinese soldiers who fought alongside North Korean troops during the war.

In his speech, Kim stressed the duty of the current generation to uphold the ideology and system established by the previous generation of war heroes. He called on the people to build a prosperous society based on these principles, describing it as a “paradise for the people.”

North Korea’s “Victory Day” celebrations included grand parades, banquets, and mass dances, with patriots gathering in Pyongyang’s main square under celebratory fireworks. This day is significant for North Koreans as it symbolizes their resilience and the sacrifices made during the war.

Contrastingly, South Korea does not mark the day with significant events, reflecting the different historical perspectives on the war’s outcome. The armistice signed on July 27, 1953, by North Korea, the United States, and China, brought an end to the hostilities, but it left the Korean Peninsula divided and in a state of uneasy peace.

The commemoration of the Korean War armistice in North Korea serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by past generations and the ongoing commitment to their ideological legacy. Kim Jong-un’s call for a “people’s paradise” underscores the enduring significance of these principles in shaping North Korea’s future.

“Comrade Kim Jong-un said it is the sacred mission and duty of our generation to protect the ideology and system defended by the previous generation of war victors with blood … and to build a paradise for the people.”
