Spanish prosecutors and Colombian pop artist Shakira settled her €7.5 million tax fraud case just before her trial started.

Shakira
Spanish singer Shakira Shakira has been the target of accusations of fraud and tax evasion. Shakira is the subject of a long-running legal battle because she is alleged to have evaded paying taxes.
Rejecting an offer from the prosecutors, she has decided to proceed with the trial. According to Shakira, she has always tried to uphold moral principles and serve as a role model for others.
The case revolves around the disagreement regarding Shakira’s residency status from 2012 to 2014. Shakira’s official residence is listed somewhere else, but the prosecution claimed she was living in Spain.
For taxation purposes, individuals who stay in Spain for more than six months are deemed residents, as per Spanish legislation. According to Shakira, she wasn’t primarily residing in Spain at the time.
According to a document released by the prosecution in July, Shakira and her then-partner, Barcelona football player Gerard Piqué, lived in the house she purchased in Barcelona in 2012. Shakira spent a significant amount of time outside of Spain and, according to her lawyers, the majority of her income until 2014 came from international tours.
Shakira has paid €17.2 million (£15 million) in taxes since claiming Spain as her place of residency for tax purposes in 2015. Piqué was penalized €2.1 million (£1.8 million) in 2019 by the Spanish national court for failing to pay taxes from 2008 to 2010. The couple, who had two sons together, announced their separation at the beginning of June.
