Venice will begin collecting admission fees from tourists in 2024

  • Venice will test a new ticketing system that will require day visitors to pay five euros.
  • This action will cut down on tourists coming to the city.
  • The new system was not about earning but rather finding a “new balance between the rights of Venice and those who visit the city.”

Beginning in the spring of 2024, Venice will test a new ticketing system that will require day visitors to pay five euros to enter the old city.

The action aims to cut down on tourists coming to the city, which was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in Danger due to the detrimental effects of Mass Tourism.

Fees from tourists

The full municipal council, which meets on September 12, must still approve the ticketing proposal. In the spring and summer of 2024, it’s expected that the new system will function throughout all federal holidays and weekends.

Students, commuters, locals, kids under 14, and tourists staying overnight will all continue to be excluded. In keeping with the city’s fragility and uniqueness, the goal is to discourage daily tourism during specific times.

The new approach seeks to strike a ” Venetians, students, and visitors must work together to strike a balance between their rights, responsibilities, and freedoms,” with the proposed five-euro fee merely covering expenditures.

Simone Venturini, the city’s tourist council member, said the new system was not about earning money but rather finding an “Equitable balance between residents, students, and workers in Venice and visitors.”
