In 2024, Vietnam continues to be the most affordable destination for immigrants, retaining the top spot for the fourth consecutive year, according to the InterNations study. The survey assessed 53 destinations based on quality of life, digital life, housing affordability, language, career prospects, salary, and job security.
Asian countries, particularly in Southeast Asia, dominate the list with six entries in the top 10. Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand are notable for their affordability and quality of life.
Vietnam Tops List of Affordable Countries for Expats in 2024
The 2024 InterNations study has once again ranked Vietnam as the most affordable country for immigrants, a title it has held for four consecutive years. The study surveyed over 12,000 expats from 174 territories, evaluating their satisfaction across multiple factors, including cost of living, financial stability, and disposable household income.
Southeast Asia prominently features in the top 10, with countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand joining Vietnam in providing affordable living options for expats. Housing affordability is a key strength in these nations, with Thailand ranking first, followed closely by Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia in terms of expat satisfaction with housing.
The report highlighted that in Vietnam, a significant number of expats prioritize work-life balance over career progression. Less than half of the expats in Vietnam work full-time, compared to the global average, contributing to a less stressful and more relaxed lifestyle. This focus on balance makes Vietnam an attractive destination for those seeking a better quality of life.
Brazil made a notable entry into the top 10 this year, replacing Malaysia, which dropped from the fifth position in 2023 to the eleventh in 2024. This shift underscores the dynamic nature of expat preferences and the varying factors that influence the affordability and desirability of different countries.
