Stricter Rules For Modified Media Are Implemented By Meta

  • Meta has made major revisions to its policies governing digitally created and modified content.
  • Meta is going to start labeling AI-generated photos, sounds, and videos that are shared across its platforms.
  • The new plan marks a change in Meta’s stance regarding modified content.

Facebook’s parent firm Meta has made major revisions to its policies governing digitally created and modified content. Meta is going to start labeling AI-generated photos, sounds, and videos that are shared across its platforms as “Made with AI” starting April 1.

It won’t matter if content was created with AI or conventional editing tools—this extension of their current policy will apply to everything.

The new plan marks a change in Meta’s stance regarding modified content, with an emphasis on keeping it on its platforms while making sure users are aware of how it was created.

Content published on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads will be covered by the updated labeling strategy; however, other services, such as WhatsApp and Quest virtual reality devices, will be subject to alternative regulations.

A few months before the US presidential election in November, when tech experts are raising alarms about the possible effects of emerging generative AI technology, these changes have been made.

In nations like Indonesia, political campaigns have already started utilizing AI technologies, pushing the limits of the rules established by Meta and OpenAI, the industry leader in generative AI.

The company’s current policies on manipulated media were criticized by Meta’s oversight board in February, who called them “incoherent.” As per Meta’s present guidelines, videos that have been altered are permitted to stay on the platform as long as they are not produced by artificial intelligence (AI) or if the language they use are not fake.

The oversight board recommended including audio-only content, films showing staged actions, and non-AI content under this policy’s scope.
