After years of a bug that allowed customers to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft has now totally closed the door to older Windows 7 keys activating the most recent version of Windows 11.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 keys will no longer be able to activate Windows 11, the company stated last month.

As of July 29, Microsoft was no longer offering free updates for Windows 10 and 11. Furthermore deleted is the installation path needed to get the free Windows 7 and 8 update.
Within an update, the company stated that Windows 10 upgrades to Windows 11 are still free. According to The Verge, clean installs of Windows 11 are now completely barred from using Windows 7 keys.
Error message: “We are unable to activate Windows on this device due to the lack of a valid digital license or product key.”
You won’t see a change in your activation status, though, if you upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 11 or used an older key. Windows 11 minimum system requirements must be met by devices to upgrade to Windows 11.
Windows 11 doesn’t support several of the features seen in Windows 10. As per Microsoft, the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 will not be enough to experience certain features and applications.
