BSNL Gains Subscribers as Major Telcos Face Losses After July Tariff Hike

  • Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea lose subscribers post-tariff hike in July 2024.
  • India’s overall telecom subscriber base declines by 0.47 million.
  • BSNL adds over 2.94 million mobile subscribers, leading net customer gains.

In July 2024, the Indian telecom sector saw a notable shift following a price hike by major players like Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.

This price increase led to a collective loss of subscribers across these private telecom operators. The overall telecom subscriber base in India marginally decreased from 1,205.64 million in June to 1,205.17 million in July, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

BSNL Rises as Private Telecom Giants Lose Ground After Tariff Hike

Conversely, BSNL, the state-run telecom provider, capitalized on the situation by adding 2.94 million new subscribers during the same period. This growth allowed BSNL to stand out as the only telecom company gaining customers amidst widespread losses. The surge in BSNL’s subscriber base reflects its appeal to price-conscious customers seeking more affordable alternatives.

In the broader telecom landscape, the overall subscriber base fell marginally, according to TRAI’s data. The dip, though small, was notable as it marked a significant moment where private sector leaders lost customers in unison. This downturn, driven by increased prices, suggests a growing sensitivity among Indian telecom users toward cost-effective services.

On the other hand, BSNL, India’s state-owned telecom provider, gained significant traction during this period. As competitors lost customers, BSNL added over 2.94 million new subscribers in July. This spike in growth highlights BSNL’s position as a more affordable and reliable alternative for mobile services, particularly for users affected by rising costs elsewhere.

BSNL’s success in gaining subscribers also reflects its competitive pricing and coverage in rural and semi-urban areas, where it continues to be a major player. While private telecom operators focus on urban markets and premium services, BSNL’s affordable plans are attracting a broader audience, especially after the July tariff hikes from rivals.

The July 2024 telecom subscriber trends underscore the impact of pricing on customer retention. While private operators saw losses due to tariff hikes, BSNL capitalized on affordability, gaining millions of new subscribers.
