The bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, followed by the 2023 tournament, underscores both the popularity and remaining hurdles facing women’s soccer.

A trio of Western European nations joined the bid to host the 2027 tournament earlier on Friday, and Brazil submitted its own bid last month.

“Extensive and comprehensive consultations between the three confederations with key stakeholders, including central governments, start from 2021,” the Dutch Football Confederation (KNVB) said in a statement with the European nations initiative.

“This leads us to believe that our three countries are well positioned to stage a FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 of unparalleled quality and impact.”

South Africa to begin with submitted a bid to host in 2027, however withdrew last month.
