Following India vs. Australia in the CWC 2023 Final, an online furor erupted on social media directed at Mitchell Marsh, an Australian cricket player. A picture that went viral and appeared to show Marsh disrespecting the coveted World Cup trophy sparked outrage among internet users all over the world.

The incident happened after Australia defeated India in Ahmedabad by a commanding seven wickets. Marsh made a fast 15 runs in just two overs and bowled two economical overs, but he was still involved in controversy because of the picture.

World Cup

The game itself demonstrated Australia’s strength, highlighted by a remarkable century from Travis Head that destroyed India’s chances of winning the tournament. Australia’s calculated choice to bowl first paid off, as they contained India’s strong batting order on a slow pitch to a target of 240 runs in 50 overs.

Australia suffered an early blow when they could only muster 47 runs when they lost three wickets in their attempt to reach the target. But Head and Marnus Labuschagne calmed things down and combined for 192 runs in a relaxed partnership.

Head left the game agonizingly close to winning, and as wild celebrations broke out on the field, Glenn Maxwell sealed the victory.

The celebration was tempered, however, by the controversy surrounding Marsh’s purported act of stepping on the World Cup trophy. The picture quickly went viral on social media, drawing harsh criticism for what many saw as a demeaning gesture toward the esteemed cricket trophy from both spectators and fans.

This controversy tainted the Australian team’s victory celebration after the final, which sparked conversations about sportsmanship and respect for the game’s iconic symbols.
