India’s Grit Shines as Bumrah Breaks WTC Record at Headingley

  • Jasprit Bumrah claims record-breaking 11th five-wicket haul in World Test Championship history.
  • Becomes first Asian pacer to take 150 Test wickets in SENA countries.
  • India leads by 96 runs at stumps on Day 3 despite England’s strong middle-order fightback.

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah made history at Headingley by surpassing Pat Cummins for the most five-wicket hauls in World Test Championship (WTC) history.

Despite a gritty fightback from England’s middle order, highlighted by Ollie Pope’s century and Harry Brook’s near-ton (99), India ended Day 3 with a narrow upper hand.

Bumrah’s Historic Haul Puts India in Command Despite England’s Resistance

Harry Brook’s heartbreak was one of the day’s emotional highlights. Playing on his home ground, he fell short of a century by just one run after offering multiple chances—three of which were spilled, including two by Yashasvi Jaiswal. His attempt to bring up his century with a boundary ended in disappointment as he found Shardul Thakur at the rope.

India’s fielding, however, left much to be desired. The side dropped five catches—four off Bumrah’s bowling—potentially costing them key momentum during England’s innings. Still, Bumrah’s ability to clean up the tail with stumps-shattering deliveries showcased his class under pressure.

England’s lower-order resilience was evident as the last five wickets added 112 runs, in sharp contrast to India’s collapse of 5 for 18 in their first innings. This wagging tail proved vital in keeping England close to parity before India’s second batting effort began.

As the fourth day looms, KL Rahul’s wicket is being viewed as a game-changer. Described by Pope as “crucial,” Rahul’s temperament under pressure could anchor India’s push toward a defendable total. With seam-friendly conditions and two days left, both sides remain in the hunt for a first-Test win.

Jasprit Bumrah’s record-breaking spell has not only etched his name in Test history but also redefined the impact an Indian pacer can have in overseas conditions. With two full days of play remaining, the Headingley Test promises high drama and potential shifts in momentum.

“Form is temporary, class is permanent.” — This old cricket adage rings true as Bumrah continues to dominate on the biggest stages, regardless of conditions.
