Gukesh wants to one day win the global chess championship

  • India has crowned a new chess world number one after D Gukesh defeated Viswanathan Anand last month.
  • He is aware that other young people are chasing after him.
  • Gukesh shares the same dream as his teammate Prag of winning the world championship in the future.

After more than 36 years, India finally has a new chess world number one after D Gukesh dethroned five-time champion Viswanathan Anand last month. But the young man from Chennai is unsure of how long his hegemony will survive.

“It’s difficult to say,” he said following the conclusion of the quick event of the Tata Steel Chess India tournament on Thursday at the Bhasha Bhawan on the National Library of India campus.

Although he is aware that young players like R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi are challenging him, he wants to hold onto his current position for as long as he can.

But up to this point, not much has changed for the 17-year-old. I recently rose to the top and thus far have not experienced any increased pressure. But I’m accustomed to dealing with pressure. There’s a long way to go, but I’m delighted with the progress I’m making,” he said.

Gukesh shares the same dream as his teammate Prag of winning the world championship in the future. I believe in myself, and if I follow the appropriate steps, I can succeed, he declared.

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen referred to Gukesh as the “strongest classical player among the younger lot” and he is currently concentrating on his fast and blitz skills as well.
