The men’s lacrosse team at University at Albany, which boasts prominent former players like Lyle Thompson, Connor Fields, and Blaze Riorden, indicates a bright future for the Great Danes at the World Lacrosse Men’s Championship.
Jake Piseno, a senior midfielder for UAlbany, stresses the value of making errors and competing against the best in the Championship as he gets ready for pool play with Team Haudenosaunee.
World Lacrosse Championship
The tournament’s “Best Defender” was Piseno, a 22-year-old Great Dane who was chosen for the World Team. He won the bronze medal despite dominating the competition. Scott Marr, the head coach of Piseno, lauded him for his maturity and willingness to pick up tips from other top athletes.
Another Great Dane named Riordan won the “Best Keeper” prize, confirming his position as the top keeper in the world. Of the 11 players and coaches from UAlbany who won gold at the World Championship, Piseno, and Riorden were two of them.

Lyle Thompson, the team’s all-time leading scorer, coached a team of six Danes that won the bronze medal, Haudenosaunee. Merrick Thomson, an assistant head coach at UAlbany, served on the coaching staff for Team Canada, which won the silver medal.
Team USA, which included Riorden and TD Ierlan, won the gold medal. Will Ramos and Steve Ramirez led Puerto Rico to a top-10 finish in the competition, while Eli and Riley Lasda’s Team Latvia placed 21st.
In his final season as a Great Dane, Piseno will draw on his San Diego experience to boost his confidence in the collegiate game.
