The former prime minister Robert Fico’s Smer-SSD party won the most votes in Slovakia’s legislative elections, taking the top spot.

After Jan Kuciak, an investigative journalist, was killed in 2018, Fico resigned as prime minister. He has since promised to stop providing Ukraine with military aid. Coalition negotiations to create the following government will be led by the winner.

Slovakia elections

Members of the European Union and NATO have expressed concern over the threat, and Slovaks who have historically had positive views of Moscow have expressed support for it on social media.

Slovakia has been a steadfast friend of Kyiv, donating its fleet of outdated MiG-29 fighter jets as well as missiles, helicopters, and other equipment. Exit polls indicated that the liberal Progressive Slovakia party would win the election.

This party promotes an “open, tolerant, cosmopolitan society” and supports a liberal stance within the European Union on matters like environmental protection and LGBTQ+ rights. Smer criticized this idea as “liberal fascism” and ran on the platforms of social security, stability, and order.

With up to 10 parties in the new parliament, ranging from libertarians to the far-right, the coalition-building process might be drawn out and difficult.
