On Armed Forces Day, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised the “duty, dedication and selfless personal sacrifice” of servicemen and women, highlighting his party’s unique commitment to the Help for Heroes Veterans’ Pledge.

Election Campaigns Highlight Veterans’ Issues on Armed Forces Day

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to honor the sacrifices of servicemen and women on Armed Forces Day, emphasizing his party’s adherence to the Help for Heroes Veterans’ Pledge. This pledge ensures the continued existence of the Office for Veterans’ Affairs, an independent review of the medical discharge process, and guarantees that veterans receive their rightful benefits and compensation. Sunak also highlighted the importance of increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 to support these commitments.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer aims to introduce a new role of armed forces commissioner if Labour wins the election. This commissioner would focus on investigating and resolving issues faced by armed forces personnel, such as inadequate housing, defective equipment, and poor discharge support. Starmer emphasized the respect and admiration Labour holds for the armed forces and their dedication to improving the conditions of service members and their families.

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, reiterated his party’s manifesto pledge to reverse cuts in the number of armed forces personnel. He also highlighted their ambition to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP. The Liberal Democrats are committed to ensuring that the armed forces are well-supported and adequately funded to meet the nation’s defence needs.

The election campaigns of all three major parties are placing a significant focus on veterans’ issues, each proposing different measures to support those who have served in the armed forces. From ensuring proper benefits and compensation to addressing housing and equipment issues, the parties are united in their recognition of the importance of supporting veterans.

As Armed Forces Day draws attention to the sacrifices of servicemen and women, political leaders are emphasizing their commitments to veterans’ support in their election campaigns. Each party is presenting unique measures to ensure that those who serve are adequately supported and respected.

“It should be the first responsibility of any government to support those who defend us.”

– Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
