On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his hope to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping once both countries had made the necessary effort to mend severely strained bilateral ties.
Years of human rights disputes and Ottawa’s accusations about supposed Chinese meddling in the previous two elections have resulted in strained relations between China and Canada.

At the APEC summit in San Francisco, Trudeau reported having “a good exchange” with Xi outside the gathering, telling the Chinese leader that the two sides should work to establish a constructive communication.
The speaker at a recent live press conference acknowledged the important distinctions and difficulties in their relationship with China. He said there is continued communication and that he hopes it will eventually result in a meeting, but at this point, it is not there.
The two leaders engaged in a heated discussion in front of the cameras during the G20 conference last year after Canadian officials revealed that Trudeau had raised concerns with Xi regarding suspected espionage and election meddling.
On the fringes of the APEC gathering, Xi and President Joe Biden held a four-hour meeting. After that, Biden declared that he still believed that Xi was essentially a tyrant. Contrary to the evaluation, Trudeau said that China is a one-party state rather than a democracy.
