Claiming that the Congress party is untrustworthy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has chastised the party for handing over the island of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka in the 1970s.

Sharing a news story describing the circumstances leading to Sri Lanka‘s takeover of the island, Modi accused the Congress of undermining India’s integrity and unity.

Katchatheevu

According to the article, despite the opposition’s protests over the choice, former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru rejected the issue as unimportant and abandoned the article.

In the past, Modi had asserted that the Gandhi administration had divided India into three political regions and transferred the island to Sri Lanka in 1974.

Fishermen from both India and Sri Lanka have historically used the island, which is sandwiched between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Then-prime minister Indira Gandhi recognized Katchatheevu as part of Sri Lanka in 1974.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M K Stalin said that Modi had “blatantly lied” during his rally, saying that the only reason Sri Lankan fishermen were bothering Tamil Nadu fishermen was because of the previous “sin” of the DMK government.
