Due to rallies and sloganeering by opposition leaders over the December 13 security breach and the suspension of MPs, the Indian Parliament is currently experiencing tremendous commotion.
Surpiya Sule, Danish Ali, Manish Tewari, and Shashi Tharoor were among the 49 additional opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha suspended for the rest of the winter session on Tuesday, bringing the total number of suspended opposition MPs to 141.
Betrayal of democracy
Jairam Ramesh, the leader of the Congress, attacked the BJP-led Centre for allegedly trying to “bulldoze” significant legislation through the House without allowing for any debate.
Congress leader Manish Tiwari claimed that Parliament has been delegitimized and is being used to enact harsh laws, criticizing the suspension of 141 MPs from both Houses. Danish Ali, who faced suspension from the Lok Sabha, questioned the logic behind classifying questioning the government as a breach of parliamentary decorum.
Lok Sabha member Dimple Yadav of the Samajwadi Party attacked the Center, referring to it as “ultimately the failure of the government.” During his suspension from the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor declared that the Opposition wants a Lok Sabha and that the Rajya Sabha will follow suit.
The present MPs’ suspension, he continued, is a betrayal of parliamentary democracy since it shows their intention to pass legislation without debate. The Rajya Sabha meeting has been rescheduled for 3 p.m.
