Entry of the Two Iranian Warships into Rio De Janeiro

Two Iranian warships were permitted to enter Rio De Janeiro by the Brazilian government after issuing a sanction threat by the US.

Port authorities of Rio say that IRIS Makran and IRIS Dena were the two warships which were entered Rio De Janeiro on Sunday morning.

Iranian Warships in Rio De Janeiro

The government of new Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva permitted these ships to enter Rio after returning from Washington D.C.

Vice Admiral Carlos Eduardo Horta Arentz and the deputy chief of Brazil’s Naval Staff gave the official permission for these two warships to dock in Rio between February 26 to March 4.

  • Already Brazil and Iran had trade relationships between them so they permitted the entry of Iranian warships last year in January for port but it was not happened because of pressure from the US.
  • Allowance for this port visit decision was a victory for Tehran, Behnam Ben Taleblu expert on Iran at the Foundation for the Defence of Democracies.
  • On February 15 in a press meeting US Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley asked the Brazilian government not to allow Iranian warships into the Rio Port.

Strategy with Iran was one of the features of Lula’s endeavors to support Brazil’s worldwide remaining during his past official terms.

He went to Tehran to meet then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2010 as he looked to expedite an atomic arrangement between Iran and the US.

In a Tuesday explanation, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) says the entry of these two warships into Rio port was a dangerous matter for the security and safety of America.
