According to a recent survey, Canadians have little faith in their institutions, which appears to be helping the Conservative Party hold a steady lead over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals. Fourteen percentage points separate Pierre Poilievre’s Tories from the ruling party.
Of those surveyed, forty percent said they would vote Conservative, twenty-six percent said Liberal and seventeen percent said NDP in an election that day.
Trust in institutions
According to the survey, Canadians are also generally more trusting of institutions than their southern neighbors, particularly when it comes to the police, the nation’s highest courts, and the administrators of federal elections.
Sixty-three percent of Canadians surveyed indicated they were unhappy with the Trudeau-led federal government. This outcome was observed in the days following the prime minister’s declaration that his administration would temporarily suspend the carbon price adjustment for home heating oil.
When asked who they think would make the best prime minister, Poilievre leads with 29%, followed by Trudeau with 19% and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh with 15%. One in three federal leaders said they wouldn’t be suitable prime ministers.
With 73% of respondents saying they trust police, police services are the most trusted institution in Canada. This figure falls to 59% in the United States. Sixty-nine percent of Canadians trust Elections Canada.
The Canadian Supreme Court, which is far less politicized than the American Supreme Court, is trusted by 66% of Canadian respondents, compared to 45% of Americans.
Even in this era of extreme inflation, 57% of Canadians still have faith in the Bank of Canada. Similar percentages, 55%, have faith in their local government, and 53% in federal employees.
