Giorgio Napolitano, a former president of Italy and a veteran of multiple administrations, passed away on Friday at the age of 98. Napolitano, who was renowned for his restraint and statesmanship, was looked on as a guarantee of stability during a period of protracted political turmoil in Italy.

Sergio Mattarella, the president of Italy at the time, commended Napolitano for his major contributions to social improvement, peace, and advancement in Italy and Europe.

In a telegram to Napolitano’s widow, Pope Francis thanked him for his commitment to upholding the harmony and togetherness of his nation. He complimented Napolitano’s decency and wisdom in making crucial judgments, particularly during critical moments for the survival of the nation.

Napolitano, who was born in 1925 under Mussolini’s regime, enlisted in a communist resistance group at the age of 17, joined the party in 1945 and was chosen to serve in parliament in 1953.

Napolitano gained political prominence in Italy with the Democratic Party of the Left when the Communist Party was disbanded. He was chosen as the nation’s leader in 2006 and presided over a time of ongoing political unrest.

Despite his intention to leave office at the end of his first term in 2013, unsuccessful parliamentary elections kept Napolitano in position until his departure in 2015.
