Most Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians. But in July of this year, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a bill to make December 25 the official Christmas holiday as it adopts the Western, Gregorian calendar.

Kira Rudik, a Ukrainian MP and leader of the Golos Zmin party told Sky News that changing the date to December 25 was “incredibly important”: “We join our European family in all aspects of our lives, including the day we celebrate Christmas.
“It’s important now not just in people’s daily lives, but at the cultural level and at the business enterprise level, while we have holidays on the same date.”
Our kids, at some point, won’t remember that it’s different, it’s just normal to them. We want to make it the new normal for them by saying we are with our European family. We celebrate like the entire democratic progressive world.”
He introduced: “we are very thankful to the leaders of non-secular agencies who’ve supported us.”
Standing outside Kyiv’s golden-domed St. Michael’s Monastery, 25-year-old Tetiana said she will celebrate on December 25 for the first time.
She stated it used to be “a bit uncommon” however “the right thing to do”.Tetiana added: “Ukrainians celebrate Christmas on December 25 like other Europeans.”
